GRIT, a Sci-Fantasy Artbook

Available on my store here : https://paa.ge/thomasbrissot

After 2 years in the making I finally reached this big professional and personal milestone of having made a book.

When I was a kid, in the 1980s, mangas, comic books, painters artbooks (and then much later on, movie “concept design” artbooks) gave me incredible visions of imaginary worlds. And for the most part it was all drawn on paper, with tools that every kid had. I took it as an invitation.

I’ve been doing concept art for 12 years now and as great as it is, we are mostly dealing with ideas, stories and tastes that are generally not ours. Building a bridge between our own sensibility and the project we are working on is actually, in my view, a very important -and sometimes challenging- part of the job.

With this book I wanted to explore my own ideas, my own story fragments. It was also the opportunity to treat each image and design as an artistic endeavor, making stylistic and painterly choices along the way, experimenting with shapes, colors, compositions…All with the printing process and its constraints in mind, which was new to me, all my work being otherwise “reproduced” on screens.

Grit is what the heroes and multiple characters present in that book need, evolving in a fantasy world with constant danger and adversity. As it turned out, grit was essential not just for starting, but also for finishing the book, helping me navigate the inevitable bumps in the road.

I am proud of the result, I hope you get to see it in real life!
